UA Earns Designation as Hispanic Serving Institution

To the UA Community,

I am very excited to share the news that the University of Arizona has been named a Hispanic-Serving Institution (HSI) by the U.S. Department of Education. Earning this important designation has required the efforts of many people across campus for several years, and I am grateful for their hard work.
 
The UA is one of three members of the Association of American Universities to earn this designation. The UA met initial eligibility requirements, including at least 25% of our students identifying as Hispanic, in 2016. UA South has had HSI status since 2002, and completing the process for the entire university demonstrates our commitment to serving the people of our state and region. We draw talented students from everywhere, including the many communities with deep roots in Arizona and the Southwestern U.S., and I am grateful to everyone who works every day to make the UA a community where all are welcome.
 
As an HSI, the UA now has access to additional resources from several federal agencies. Areas eligible for funding include financial aid and other student services like counseling and academic tutoring. The University can also pursue resources for faculty development, classroom improvement, and new scientific and laboratory equipment, all of which go towards making the best of the UA learning experience available to every student.
