Review of the César E. Chávez Building Name
Dear campus community,
The University of Arizona is deeply troubled by the recent reports regarding César E. Chávez, and we are taking the allegations seriously. We recognize they have a profound impact on our students, faculty, and staff.
I have charged the university’s Naming Advisory Committee with reviewing whether the current name of the César E. Chávez Building on our Tucson main campus should be retained or reconsidered. The committee will examine the historical, institutional, and community context behind the naming, and whether the namesake’s legacy reflects the university’s mission and values.
This review will be informed by input from members of the university community and relevant partner groups, including, but not limited to, the Adalberto & Ana Guerrero Student Space, the Department of Mexican American Studies, UNIDOS Faculty & Staff Association, Campus Community Connections, student government, alumni, community leaders, and external experts. I have asked the committee to complete this work and provide me with a written report and its recommendations within 60 days.
The Naming Advisory Committee is comprised of representatives of the campus community from leadership, shared governance groups, academic, and student organizations. Its membership and authority are governed by the university’s Naming of Facilities and Programmatic Units Policy.
The well-being of our campus community remains our priority. This situation may raise a range of reactions, and we encourage you to take advantage of support resources available to you.
- Campus Health's Counseling & Psych Services (CAPS) provides on-demand mental health support to students. Students can schedule an appointment online, drop in at one of CAPS locations during business hours, or call 520-621-3334 for 24/7 support.

We are committed to a thoughtful and inclusive review. I will share further updates after I receive the committee's report.
Sincerely,
Suresh
