Remembering Professor Tom Meixner

Oct. 3, 2023

Dear Students and Colleagues,

I shared last week the University’s plans to commemorate the life of Dr. Thomas Meixner and several ways we will remember and honor him one year after his untimely and tragic death. As we approach that day, Thursday, October 5, 2023, I want to again thank everyone who has prepared these remembrances and invite all of you to take part of your day this Thursday to participate as you feel comfortable. The Newman Center – located at 1615 E. 2nd Street – will host space from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., with a service held at noon. That service will be livestreamed if you are unable to attend in person.

For many in our University of Arizona community, the past year has been tremendously painful, and I know that this week will be especially poignant. Dr. Meixner was an incredible person, and his death has left an indelible mark on our community. I cannot speak for those of you who knew Tom the best, nor do I want to try – but I hope you feel you have the space and the opportunity to share your thoughts and feelings as you see fit. As president of the University, I do feel a responsibility to mark the occasion for our community, which is my reason for writing today.

If you choose to participate in the remembrance events on Thursday, I hope that they are meaningful for you. If you need support that day – or any day – I encourage you to reach out to those around you and to use the resources the University has in place for students and employees.

As a reminder, in addition to services usually offered by CAPS for students and ComPsych for employees, mental health support will be available at the Newman Center. For employees, counselors will be on-site from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and available via phone from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. at (484) 222-0246 or (212) 946-1583.

For students, CAPS will have representatives on site to assist you get connected with mental health resources.

The past year has been difficult in many ways. My hope is that we continue to learn from one another and continue to practice compassion for each other and for ourselves.

Sincerely,

Robert C. Robbins, M.D.

President
