Communications from the President
Below you can read communications from the President to the campus community and the community at large, including addresses, memorandums and opinion pieces prepared for local and regional publications.
A Message from President Robbins
Along with so many of you, I was sickened by the footage of George Floyd’s horrific death on a Minneapolis, Minnesota street while in police custody this week. Although this took place nearly 2,000 miles from Tucson, it resonates here and across this nation with every person who expects basic human rights and demands equal justice for all. Mr. Floyd’s tragic death stands in stark contrast to these minimal societal expectations, and the senseless and unnecessary taking of his life is both heartbreaking and infuriating.
Update on COVID-19 Response
While the risk of contracting COVID-19 in Tucson remains low and there are no confirmed cases on any domestic University of Arizona campuses, the global and national situation has continued to evolve swiftly. Accordingly, we have adjusted the plans for campus mitigation.
Delaying Start of Classes
The University of Arizona’s top priority is the health and safety of our students, our employees and our community. At this time, the risk of contracting COVID-19 in Tucson is low, and there are no confirmed cases on any domestic University of Arizona campus.
Senior Vice President Appointments
I am pleased to announce the appointments of Dr. Liesl Folks as Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost and Dr. Elizabeth (Betsy) Cantwell as Senior Vice President for Research and Innovation. They both will begin their roles at the University of Arizona on July 29, reporting directly to me as key members of the UA’s senior executive team.
Congratulations to the class of 2019!
This Friday, I will have the honor of conferring degrees on nearly 6,700 students at the University of Arizona’s 155th Commencement at Arizona Stadium, including bachelor's, master's, doctoral, and professional degrees from across the disciplines.
