SUBJECT:  Announcement regarding Executive Director and Vice President

As you may be aware, J.C. Mutchler, Executive Director and Vice President of the Executive Office of the President, has been very ill for some time. I know that he appreciates the many kind wishes of support he continues to receive and has expressed gratitude for the extraordinary care provided by his physicians and the healthcare professionals at the University of Arizona Medical Center.  He continues to make progress in what is expected to be a long recovery process.

A life-threatening illness tends to put matters into perspective, and J.C. has let me know that he wishes to return to his teaching and research full-time when he is well enough to return to work. He is well known and well regarded for his passion for Southwestern U.S. history and looks forward to making additional contributions in this field. While I support his decision, I will miss the opportunity to work with him to advance the University’s plans and priorities.  J.C. was instrumental in launching our Never Settle Strategic Academic and Business Plan and he forged important connections with stakeholders across Arizona.

The Arizona Board of Regents members relied on J.C. for important information and analysis, and they, too, will miss having him in this important role. Given our need to communicate effectively and seamlessly with this group of statewide leaders, I have decided to create a Director of Arizona Board of Regents Relations position for which we will consider both external and internal candidates. Amy Taczanowsky agreed to assume the Executive Director’s responsibilities in the president’s office in an interim capacity and has performed so admirably that I am appointing her to this role on a permanent basis.  The vice president role in my office will not be filled.

In addition to extending my gratitude and good wishes to J.C., I want to express appreciation to members of my extended leadership team who have stepped up to cover events and major projects in J.C.’s absence.
