Robert N. Shelton, PhD, was inaugurated as the 19th president of The University of Arizona on Oct. 26, 2006.
Arriving in a procession that began at four points across campus, Shelton, faculty members, students, visiting academics, members of the Arizona Board of Regents, Tucson Mayor Bob Walkup, Phoenix Mayor Phil Gordon, Gov. Janet Napolitano and others converged on the west lawn of Old Main.
There, an opening ceremony was held that included performances by Odaiko Sonora, a group combining traditional Japanese drums and modern jazz, The University of Arizona African Dance Ensemble and Musicians, and the Pride of Arizona marching band.
The procession continued into Centennial Hall, where several speakers gave remarks welcoming Shelton to Tucson and the UA.
In his inaugural address, Shelton outlined five missions for the University as it rededicates itself to the state - to be the place where society will turn to solve complex problems, expand its role as an engine of economic development, provide access to those who seek an education, continue to intensify academic excellence and serve as a source of inspiration for people and communities.
Arizona, he said, has yet to know the "remarkable treasure it has in The University of Arizona." He promised that the state will soon "feel the benefits of the UA's presence more tangibly."
"We will hold ourselves more accountable, and we stand ready to serve this state in times of need."
